Can songs change something? - Mohou písně něco změnit?

Vladimír Merta / Lucien Zell - play debate

Jan Hrnčíř, the producer of the film "Year of Marihuana", asked us whether it would be possible for Lucien Zell to appear on The Debating Club.
We tried to fulfill this wish, and organized a debate on a topic suggested by Lucien: “Can songs change something?”
We approached several Czech singers, out of whom Vladimír Merta responded positively. Together they ask questions and look for answers on subjects such as: the mystery of music which will outlive us; inner freedom under the totalitarian regime and necessary compromises; jealousy towards more successful colleagues; the image of an independent singer which might sometimes do more than the song itself; the most favorite songs of Vladimír Merta and why he likes them; and on improvisation.
The singer and song writer Vladimír Merta has been making music since the 1970s, at which time he graduated from FAMU (Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague). During the 1980s he wrote and directed animated films. He worked on film scores, theater and incidental music, on setting poetry into music, and on improvised music combining genres.
Lucien Zell says that his roots are in Russia, from where his ancestors immigrated to America. Since 1998 he has lived in Prague, where he writes, recites, and publishes his poetry, and sings and plays wherever he can.

Jan Hrnčíř, producent filmu Rok konopí, se nás zeptal, zda by bylo možné umožnit Lucienu Zellovi vystoupení v Debatním klubu. Snažili jsme se tomuto přání vyhovět a zorganizovali jsme debatu na téma, které navrhl Lucien - Mohou písně něco změnit?
Oslovili jsme několik českých písničkářů, z nichž na pozvání pozitivně reagoval Vladimír Merta. Společně si kladli otázky a hledali odpovědi na témata: o tajemství hudby, která nás přežije, o vnitřní svobodě uvnitř totalitního režimu a nutných kompromisech, o žárlivosti na úspěšné kolegy, o image nezávislého zpěváka, který udělá někdy možná více než samotná píseň, o nejoblíbenějších písních Vladimíra Merty, proč je má rád a o improvizaci.
Písničkář Vladimír Merta vystupuje se svými písněmi od sedmdesátých let, kdy absolvoval pražskou FAMU. Během osmdesátých let psal a režíroval animované filmy. Věnuje se filmové, divadelní a scénické hudbě, zhudebňování poezie a improvizované hudbě na pomezí žánrů.
Lucien Zell sám o sobě říká, že je původem z Ruska, odkud jeho předci emigrovali do Ameriky. Od roku 1998 žije v Praze, kde píše, recituje a vydává své básně a zpívá a hraje, kde se dá.
